Jess Gillespie
Director of Worship
“Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope:
Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” – Lamentations 3:21-23
At an early age I learned that I loved leading worship. I am an SMC life member and at age 15, I was invited by the Youth Pastor to play piano for our first “contemporary” worship songs integrated in the morning service. Since then, I have sang in choirs during High School, College and at SMC. When my husband Steve and I joined the Sr. High Youth Advisor team in 2006, I saw a need for guitar players to help the youth sing the contemporary songs that they connected with. I quickly taught myself to play and have been hooked on being a part of the SMC worship teams ever since!
When I am not at church ;), I enjoy playing and listening to music, watching sports and gardening. Steve and I have 3 children – Logan, Sean and Cora.
Phil Detweiler
Facilities & Events Coordinator
Phil spent many years self employed as a general contractor completing many types of commercial, industrial and institutional projects, including renovation and new construction. Now he has chosen a less stressful lifestyle, serving full-time as the Facilities Manager and Event Coordinator for Souderton Mennonite Church. He grew up at SMC and graduated from Christopher Dock Mennonite High School in 1983. Following high school, he attended other Mennonite Churches returning to SMC in 2008. He enjoys volunteering for non profit organizations, which have included Souderton High School Marching Band, Souderton Mennonite Homes, Souderton High School Musicals & Theater, Care and Share Thrift Shoppes. He also volunteers in the sound booth here at SMC. Phil enjoys research regarding the stock market and the economy.
Phil and his wife Diane were married in 1988. They have four sons: Greg and his wife Emily, Luke and his wife Ashley, Seth and his wife Jaclyn & Blake and his wife Kim. They have 4 grandchildren and enjoy playing board games and going to the beach together as a family.
Jess McQuade
Director of Youth and Young Adults
In early 2018, Jess heard God’s call to leave her 20-year career in the business world, but she wasn’t sure what He had in mind for her. While waiting for God’s direction, she got more involved in youth ministry at SMC and absolutely loved it. It wasn’t long before God opened the door for her to step into the role of Director of Junior High Youth Ministry.
Jess has a commitment to grow personally in her relationship with Christ, a desire to make meaningful and authentic connections between people (especially intergenerational) and a passion to equip young people to follow and serve God. Some of her “best days ever” are when those three things come together at once!
Spending time with her husband John, and young adult children, Kate, Aidan and Kieran is something she greatly enjoys and values — especially traveling and being outdoors with them.
Jess is thankful for the opportunity to work with the amazing young people and youth advisors at SMC!
